Begin Again
Beginning again is not always the easiest thing to do. As a necessary component of life, new beginnings can offer an exhilarating second chance, but they can also be painful even if one is suitably prepared. Begin Again is a reaction to being thrust into a life change I thought I was prepared for. This change was met with pain and a sense of loss for the people and places I was comfortable with. Despite my desire to fit into this landscape, I found myself met with opposition while overcoming various obstacles. These barriers stunted my willingness to form permanent relationships in this impermanent situation. It was only after I settled into the discomfort that I really began to enjoy my new surroundings. With a fresh perspective, I began to immerse myself in the distinct landscape of eastern Iowa.
For this series, I am using an entire roll of film to make fragmented landscapes. I see each contact sheet as an exercise in the act of looking and engaging with my current location. It is important to me to show the resulting imperfections of using a low-fidelity camera with a plastic lens in order to further highlight fractures in time, space, and emotion.
